When looking for concrete planters with moss, are you looking for planters with moss inside or concrete planters covered in moss but with other plants inside?
I ask you this question because they are two completely different solutions. First, we are looking for a furnishing solution, typically for indoors and suitable for all solutions, from casual to luxury. In the second, we are trying to create a mystical or aged effect on concrete planters or statues, and it is typically an outdoor solution.
In this article, I’ll show you my selection of concrete planters with moss for inspiration and ready-to-buy products. I will also give you some brief tips on building your own concrete planter with moss.
DIY Concrete planter with moss in Zen style
Moss is a splendid plant with multiple uses. A new trend linked to moss is taking place, the possibility of creating a miniature Zen garden.
Finally, we can create the Zen garden of our dreams without spending a fortune or owning a garden. To do this, all you need is some moss, a concrete planter, and a few other details that we will now see together. Ready for Zen?
Materials
Here is a list of materials for making a mini zen garden with a concrete planter and moss:
- Concrete Planter
- Moss (live or stabilized)
- Gravel or sand
- Rake or small brush
- Stones or other decorative elements like wood
- Water spray bottle
How to make a mini zen garden with moss
1. Select the right Moss
First, we need to think about our dear moss. I opt for live moss, particularly for a type of moss such as pincushion moss, reindeer moss or Irish moss. They are types of moss that create a cushion effect of bright green color and simulate the shape of a bush or small shrub very well.
You can also choose a stabilized moss; in this case, maintenance is zero, but the zen effect is greatly nullified, in my opinion.
2. Get a concrete planter
First, ensure you find a planter that is the right size for your garden. The shape must be rectangular and with a low edge. If you are a DIY expert, you can also create it yourself by making a mold with wood and pouring the concrete mix into it. Otherwise, you can find them already ready, like the one at the following link:https://tidd.ly/3YswWmA.
3. Enter gravel or sand.
You can choose various types of materials and types of sand or gravel as the basis for your mini Zen garden. In this case, I opted for sand that I took directly from the beach, but you can choose various options based on your personal tastes. Spread a layer of sand in the planter almost to the edge, leaving just a few millimeters free.
4. Place Stones or other decorative elements
it’s time to insert the decorations. These will define the layout of your Zen garden, don’t overdo it; sometimes, a piece of bark or a stone may be enough, and you don’t need many elements. I suggest that you also use small elements such as stones or wood where to place the moss.
5. All moss.
It’s time to insert our beloved moss. If you have opted for the stabilized, you can place it where you prefer and escort it to you. If, on the other hand, as I hope, you have chosen live moss, then tie it to a support such as a stone or wood where you want it to remain and grow. Once the moss starts sticking and growing, you can also remove the binding.
For live moss, remember to keep it moist but not wet. One spray a day is usually more than enough.
6. Turn on the zen
all you have to do is use a small rake or brush to even out the sand and create perfect Japanese Zen-style furrows.
Remember to maintain the degree of humidity and to trim your moss from time to time.
There is nothing left to do but enjoy your own mini Zen garden.
